How to Clean Wood Floors

My clean and waxed kitchen floor.

My recently new wood kitchen floor was beginning to look flat and dull.  I had been cleaning it with Murphy’s Oil soap, but it seemed to leave a residue.  This morning, I searched the Internet for “Homemade Wood Floor Cleaners” and I found a cool website I would like to share called Tipnut

The site has recipes for homemade products used to clean wood floors.  I used the recipe that called for ½ cup of white vinegar and 1 gallon of water to clean the floor.  When it was dry, I tried the homemade wax that consisted of 1 Tablespoon of olive oil and 1 Tablespoon of white vinegar.  I stirred the mixture together and dipped an old T-shirt rag into the wax.  I rubbed the wax into the floor in a circular motion.  Wah-La! My floor was shining once more.  I only used ½ of the wax mixture for my 10×10 floor.

What is more amazing is that all of these products came from items I always have in the house, and it cost me nothing to make my floor look new again.  I highly recommend the website Tipnut. Pizza Minus the Box

Great recipe for those who are allergic to tomatoes, but still love pizza.

When I was diagnosed with a food allergy to tomatoes, I thought my life would never include pizza again.  It was a sad day in the jennirific world, but luckily it was a short lived break up.  Discovering a wide variety of ways to concoct alternative pizza creations impossible to eat from a box put Pizza Night right back in the weekly rotation! 

To get the Jennirific Pizza Party rolling, let’s start with the all important crust. This dough acts as a vehicle to the flavors of the toppings; great dough equals a great slice. If you are super cool and have a stand mixer, please utilize it and know the whole time that I am green with envy 😉 

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 Tbsp Dry Active Yeast
  • 1 Tsp Sugar
  • 1 Cup Warm Water
  • 3 Cup Flour
  • 1 Tsp Salt
  • 2 Tsp Olive Oil

Putter…Putter…Putter…

I am a putterer.  A putterer, according to the Merriam Webster dictionary, is a person who regularly or occasionally engages in an activity as a pastime rather than as a profession.  I have named myself this because it is impossible to keep my mind from flitting from one subject to the next.  Where some people have the ability to focus on one thing exclusively and become good at it, I on the other hand, flit about, or putter with hundreds of things.  I guess I get bored or maybe I have adult ADHD and this is what it looks like.  Who knows?  All I know is that I cannot stick with any one thing so diligently, that I actually succeed at that one thing in a big way.  I guess I am the epitome of the quote, “Jack of all Trades; master of none”.

Here are some things that I have puttered with…

Singing.  I have always wanted to be a singer.  As a little girl, I stood in the bathroom mirror and sang to Donny Osmond and Michael Jackson songs.  At 17, I joined a band for about six months and lost my voice singing “Highway to Hell” by AC-DC.  I have sung at karaoke night, been in a talent show, and even tried out for “The Voice”.

At one point in my early years, I was not happy with myself; and I hated the way I spoke.  Following this further, I went to the library, picked up some English workbooks, and taught myself proper English.  It was not that hard, I had learned English in school. I just used too much slang when I spoke.  This helped me talk better and made me feel comfortable around others.

When my children were young, my family needed another income, but I did not want to get a job outside the home and leave my kids with strangers.  So I opened up my own daycare. It was a legitimate business with a license and a food program.  I had many clients with many babies who came and went through my home while my kids were growing up.  I even claimed it on my taxes.  Nevertheless, I got bored and it was hard always having your home as a place of business. Consequently, daycare led to going back to school full-time and working part-time to become a teacher.  After all, I still enjoyed kids; I just did not want to have them in my house.  With my own children older and in school all day, I could now focus on getting a BA in Education.

However, that still was not enough for me.  I then began reading about alternative medicine. No, I didn’t become a doctor! However, I did learn some interesting things about supplements, and ailments, and different cures for everyday things.  I also learned how eating affects your health, which lead to cooking!

Trying out different and healthy recipes became a new hobby of mine.  I took old recipes and adjusted them to the new and improved recipes.  I collected recipe books from garage sales and thrift stores.  I made some delicious meals and a few duds that even the dog would not eat.

I took up hobbies like sewing, woodworking, and gardening.  I collected books on each of those subjects, too.  I have made curtains for my whole house and for a few family members’ homes. One Easter Break, I decided to make a queen-sized bed out of pine. (I still sleep on this bed.) In addition, every spring I plant my garden of tomatoes, broccoli, and cucumbers.  I still have not perfected a good gardening technique.

When my bathroom desperately needed to be gutted and redone, I convinced my husband we could DIY it.  That too began on an Easter Break and lasted a few weeks after break to my husband’s dismay.  I have since, challenged myself to redo a room for under $500, laid two laminate floors, and painted every room in my house twice.

Then there is writing….  I have always, as long as I can remember, written: Diaries, journals, stories, jokes, articles, poems, and now, blogs.  I have tried to write novels, without much luck, because, I believe, I cannot stick with anything that long.  However, short blogs, short anything, I can do.

I am not sure if I will ever find one thing, I can stick with long enough to be good at it. I guess I really like to putter.  Oh, did I mention that I have been married 31 years?  Maybe I am a star at marriage.  Who knew???

Grandmother’s Chicken Pasta Primavera

Spaghetti with chicken, garlic, peppers, onions, carrots, pea pods, and broccoli. Spiced with Parmesan cheese, red pepper, and garlic.

INGREDIENTS:

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 tablespoons butter

3 breast boneless, skinless, chicken breasts

2 cloves garlic, chopped

1 small onion, sliced and quartered

1 medium green pepper, sliced in strips

1/4 pound fresh pea pods

1/2 pound fresh broccoli florets

2 whole carrots, julienned

1 tablespoon dried oregano

1/2 cup chicken broth

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes

4 tablespoons Parmesan cheese, fresh or powdered

16 ounces Whole wheat spaghetti, cooked according to package

DIRECTIONS:

1. Add olive oil and butter to a large skillet, heat to medium. Add chicken breasts and saute until done.  Cut chicken breasts into bite-sized chunks.

2. While chicken is cooking, prepare the spaghetti according to package directions. Add broccoli to boiling spaghetti water in the last two minutes of cooking.  Drain and set aside.

3. Add green pepper, garlic and onion to chicken and cook on medium heat until the onions are translucent.  Add carrots and pea pods, cook for 3 minutes or until pea pods are tender.  Add 1/2 cup of chicken broth and 1/4 teaspoon of red pepper flakes. Heat until boiling.

4. Add spaghetti,  broccoli, and Parmesan cheese to chicken mixture.  Toss until well combined.

5. Serve immediately.  Add a little more Parmesan cheese and red pepper flakes on top, if desired.

Servings: 6

Serving Ideas: Serve with Grandma’s Garlic Bread.

Grandmother’s Garlic Bread

Homemade Garlic Delight to serve with pasta, steak, or eat alone.

Servings: 4

INGREDIENTS:

2 rolls Turano French Bread Rolls , Sliced in half

2 Tablespoons butter, softened

2 teaspoons garlic powder

1 Tablespoon oregano, dried leaves

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Slice two French bread rolls in half.

2. Butter the four slices generously.Place on a baking sheet.

3. Sprinkle the garlic powder evenly on each roll.  Then, top each roll with oregano.

4. Bake for 5-10 minutes in the oven, until tops are browned but not burnt.

5. Remove from oven and slice each half in half. There will be eight halves to serve with you meal.

Grandmother’s Lasagna

Grandmother’s Lasagna is the perfect food!  Layers of yummy cheesy goodness to warm your healthiest appetites. Great for crowds, holidays, and potlucks. Easy to make and easy to eat.

INGREDIENTS:

1 pound lean ground beef

5 links Turkey Italian Sausage, hot or mild, casings removed

2 jars Your favorite traditional spaghetti sauce

1 16 oz. small curd cottage cheese

1 large egg

1 package Lasagna noodle

32 ounces shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese dry

1 tablespoon oregano

DIRECTIONS:

1. Brown ground beef and sausage together in a large pan until cooked.  Add the two jars of spaghetti sauce and simmer for 20 minutes.

2. In a pot of boiling water, cook the lasagna noodles according to package directions.

3. In a medium bowl, mix the container of cottage cheese and egg together. Set aside.

4. In another medium bowl, mix the oregano and the mozzarella cheese together and set aside.

5. In a 9×13-inch baking pan, ladle enough of the meat sauce to lightly cover the bottom of the pan.  Place 3 or 4 noodles side by side in the pan.  You may need on more to fit the bottom of the pan.

6. Layer meat sauce over noodles, then a few tablespoons of cottage cheese mixture, add a few handfuls of mozzarella cheese over the cottage cheese, finally sprinkle the Parmesan cheese generously.

7. Continue on repeating the layers, ending with mozzarella cheese.   Usually, you will have 3-4 layers.

8. Place non-stick tinfoil over the pan and bake in a 350 preheated oven for 1 hour.  Take the tinfoil off and cook until cheese is brown.   Take out of the oven and let it sit for 20 minutes before serving.  Cut into squares.

Notes: Let lasagna sit for 20 minutes after it is removed from the oven before cutting and serving.

Freezes well.

Serving Ideas: Serve with a green salad and garlic bread.
