10 Questions about Me

What is a real fear you have?  I am afraid of the dark.  I still sleep with a light on in the kitchen to illuminate the house.  If I wake up in the middle of the night, I want to be able to make out all the furniture in the room and see my hand in front of my face.  When I go on vacation, I drive my family crazy by putting on the bathroom light in hotel rooms.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? As a kid, I wanted to be a nun, a racecar driver, and a rock-star.  Catholic School probably fueled my desire to be a nun, and then as church was replaced by the drag races on Sundays, I decided I wanted to be a racecar driver like my father.  Finally, I wanted to be a famous singer in a Rock and Roll band.

What are some of your hobbies? My hobbies include reading, writing, blogging, Improv, singing, gardening, woodworking, crafting, DIY projects, cooking, and anything that catches my interest.

What hobby would you like to start? I am currently interested in bee-keeping and home canning.  I am reading up on both of these hobbies currently.

If you could tell people anything, what would be the most important thing to say? You can do anything you put your mind to do.  Only YOU limit YOU!

Name one item from your “bucket list”? I would like to go to the Caribbean and enjoy white sandy beaches.

What’s the best prank you’ve pulled off? I once created a treasure hunt for a friend on her birthday.  I left her instructions in her mailbox that took her to 7-eleven to pick a map (it was fun to get the clerk go along with this), the map lead her eventually to a hotel room.  When she opened the door of the room, all of her friends yelled surprise.  It was a great party!

What book are you planning to read next? FIFTY SHADES OF GREY, by E. L. James

Coffee or Tea?  It is most certainly coffee for me.  I need the caffeine morning, noon, and night. I do also enjoy a nice cup of tea here and there.

Lemon Torte or Chocolate Cheesecake? I always choose Chocolate! I like chocolate anything.  Just cover it in chocolate and it will be delicious.

“SISTERHOOD OF THE WORLD BLOGGER AWARD”

I am honored to accept this award. I would like to thank my blogging friend, Francine from http://francineinretirement.wordpress.com/ for nominating my site for the “SISTERHOOD OF THE WORLD BLOGGER AWARD”.  Please visit her blog for thought-provoking photos and read her insightful thoughts.   Francine always has a kind word and positive message.

Now, I must tell you seven things about myself that you do not know.  Ooh, this is the tough part.

  1.  I have recently acquired a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership.   I could technically apply to schools to become a vice-principal or principal; however, I have decided to give writing a try to keep my teaching position.
  2. My son is getting married in October to a wonderful young woman. Wedding preparation is on my agenda until the big day. It is so exciting!
  3. I consider my daughter one of my closest confidants.
  4. Karaoke is my friend.  I love to sing, but only the lead.  I am terrible at harmonizing.
  5. I was born on Halloween, and I will NEVER stop Trick or Treating.
  6. I am easily bored, so I always have something to do to keep myself busy.
  7. I live in the same house I grew up in, and I love it.

As this is the “SISTERHOOD OF THE WORLD BLOGGER AWARD”, I would like to nominate the following sisters for the award. Thank you to all of the followers and friends who visit and comment on my Musings.  I greatly appreciate your generosity and love.   Please pick-up your award here and let me know when you receive it.  Oh, Happy Day!  Blessings to all.

The Giver by Lois Lowery

Posted on

The Giver (The Giver, #1)The Giver by Lois Lowry

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

If you like dystopian stories like The Hunger Games, you will love The Giver. This young adult novel written by Lois Lowery is set in the future where everything is “sameness”. The main character in the story is Jonas, a 12-year-old who has been assigned his life’s profession as a Receiver of the community’s memories.

In Jonas’ community, you apply for your mate, and apply for children. Birthmothers whose assignment in the community is only to have babies for three years birth children. The elderly and those who are not perfect are chosen for “release”.

The book has won The 1994 Newberry Award, and the American Library Association named it as one of the 100 Most Challenged books.

This book deals with the ideas of sexuality, war, and controlled societies. It is listed as a Young Adult Novel; however, it is written so well, that adults will enjoy the story, too. Lois Lowery weaves a tale that makes you think deeply about even it after you have put the book down.
