Weekly Photo Challenge: Green

I just love the Weekly Photo Challenge from The Daily Post @ WordPress.com.  I look forward to the new challenge when it is posted on Friday.  This week the challenge is GREEN!  My interpretation comes from a trip I shared with my husband to Niagara Falls.  The breathtaking views of the falls from Niagara Falls State Park where we enjoyed the American and Bride Veil Falls on the Cave of the Winds were exhilarating.  In a place where one would think to see only blue, I found a rainbow of color, especially green.  The park offers lush green pathways and a green trolley to take you from one end of the 400 acres to the other.  It is a place everyone should visit at least once.

“New to The Daily Post? Whether you’re a beginner or a professional, you’re invited to get involved in our Weekly Photo Challenge to help you meet your blogging goals and give you another way to take part in Post a Day / Post a Week. Everyone is welcome to participate, even if your blog isn’t about photography.

Here’s how it works:

1. Each week, we’ll provide a theme for creative inspiration. You take photographs based on your interpretation of the theme, and post them on your blog (a new post!) anytime before the following Friday when the next photo theme will be announced.

2. To make it easy for others to check out your photos, title your blog post “Weekly Photo Challenge: (theme of the week)” and be sure to use the “postaday″ tag.

3. Subscribe to The Daily Post so that you don’t miss out on weekly challenge announcements. Sign up via the email subscription link in the sidebar or RSS.”

Funny Things Grandkids Say

These are the cutest quips from grandkids I have ever read. I just had to share them with you. Enjoy them and please visit http://russtowne.com

A friend shared these with me and I thought you might enjoy them too:

1. She was in the bathroom, putting on her makeup, under the watchful eyes of her young granddaughter, as she’d done many times before. After she applied her lipstick and started to leave, the little one said, “But Grandma, you forgot to kiss the toilet paper good-bye!” I will probably never put lipstick on again without thinking about kissing the toilet paper good-bye….

2. My young grandson called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday. He asked me how old I was, and I told him, 62. My grandson was quiet for a moment, and then he asked, “Did you start at 1?”

3. After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. As she heard the children getting more and more…

Weekend Plans to Make You Smile

Posted on

It it a big weekend on the comedy stage.

Laughter and hilarity are the costumes they wear.

Audience participation is how they will gauge.

As the Improv ensues- Come out if you dare!

There will be games and music for all to enjoy.

Vendors, carts, and stands full of food.

A karaoke band to help sing out your joy.

On a hot, summer night, this will lighten the mood.

This is a carnival of medium proportion

With jesters and quartets of some fame.

No cover charge or any such notion

Spend your dollars on goodies and games.

A once a year kind of deal.

Bring the whole family to see.

It does not matter how low you feel

For the good times will make you happy.

Bleach Pen Adventures

Posted on

Back in June, I reblogged The Renegade Seamstress’s T-Shirt Bleach Pen Design Tutorial.  I thought it was such a cool project that I had to try it myself.   Here is how I created a really cool summer shirt for less than $6.

SUPPLIES

1. Clorox Bleach Pen

2. Garage Sale shirt

3. Paper bag

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Insert brown paper bag into shirt so that the bleach does not leak through.  I did this project on a card table in the garage. I covered the card table with a plastic tablecloth.

2. Using the thin tip of the bleach pen, draw the design you wish to have on the shirt.  I chose simple circles.

3.  Let shirt dry.  The longer it dries the whiter the design will be.  I left my shirt to dry for about three hours.

4. Carefully rinse off bleach with cold water.  Wash separately to avoid bleaching other items.

5. Wear with pride.

Other ways to use the bleach pen could be to make personalized pillow cases, bags, and towels.  I also thought it might be interesting to bleach a pair of dark gym shoes with a design.  There are so many applications for this art.

Please share your ideas or projects with me when you try the Bleach Pen Technique.

BUBBLES=SUMMER

Little Girls Blowing Bubbles

What fun would summer be without bubbles?  It is the season of bubbles, and with the 4th of July coming soon, you may want to have some bubbles around for your parties and BBQ’s.

You can purchase pre-made bubbles at just about any store for a dollar or less.  This makes bubbles a very inexpensive toy for kids of all ages. Those colorful, plastic bottles of fun have a wand inside, so all you have to do is open the bottle, pull out the wand, and make bubbles.  It is possible to make your own bubbles using common ingredients around the house.  Here are a couple of popular recipes found around the Internet…

Recipe #1

1 Part Dish soap (Dawn or Joy are the preferred brands)        15 Parts Water

Recipe # 2

1 Part Dish soap

10 Parts Water

.25 Parts White Karo Syrup

Ideas for Homemade Wands could include: a wire hanger, a straw, a piece of string, or an old pair of sunglasses with the lens popped out.  Be creative!

If you are looking for a conversation starter, you can bring up these interesting facts about bubbles.

1.   A Chicago company called Chemtoy began selling bubble solution in the 1940s.

 2.   Soap bubbles blown into air that is below a temperature of −15 C (5 F) will freeze when they touch a surface.

3.   About 200 million bottles of bubbles are sold annually.

 4.   Largest Free-Floating Soap Bubble: On October 9, 2005, John Erck of XTREME Bubbles blew the Guinness World Record largest free-floating soap bubble, 105.4 cubic feet (2.98 cubic meters) in size. If the bubble were filled with water, it would hold 788 gallons and weigh 3.2 tons. To give you another idea of its size, 13,627 baseballs would fit inside of it.

 5.   Most Bubbles Blown with a Tarantula in the Mouth: The longest time blowing soap bubbles with a tarantula in the mouth is 1 minute 27 seconds and was achieved by Bruno Meggiolaro (Italy) on the set of Lo Show dei Record in Rome, Italy, on 25 February 2010.  A second tarantula was walking over his body during the attempt. The record was part of the Italian TV show “Lo Show dei Record”  See the record at The Guinness Book of World Records.
